“Boning Up” on Pet Trusts
Estate Planning for Your Clients’ Pets
California's new pet trust law has the promise of providing peace of mind for pet owners who want to ensure their dogs, cats, horses, etc. are properly cared for after the owner's death or incapacity. But the law also could have unintended consequences, regardless of the amount clients want to leave in their estate plans to provide for their pets. The law gives third parties - complete strangers to a pet trust - rights to accountings and information, to petition a court concerning the trust, and to inspect both the pet and the premises in which the pet is kept.
Our panel of estate planning experts (and animal care lovers) will address these concerns, and will focus on the pet trust law's practical issues confronting lawyers, clients, trustees and animal caregivers. They will help you navigate through the applicable law and prepare you to competently advise your clients about their available options after they are no longer able to care for their pets. This is truly a "don't miss program"!
